GSSM Alumnus Dr. Vikhyat S. Bebarta Elected to the National Academy of Medicine
The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is proud to share that alumnus Dr. Vikhyat S. Bebarta (’90) has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), one of the highest honors in the fields of health, medicine, and research.
NAM recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. It elects only 100 new members globally each year. Dr. Bebarta joins a select 2026 class featuring two Nobel Prize laureates, former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, the Director of the National Cancer Institute, the President of Mass General, the CEO of Seattle Children's, and the President of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Dr. Bebarta was a member of GSSM’s inaugural graduating class in 1990 after growing up in Denmark, SC. He has remained deeply connected to the institution throughout his career. In 2021, he served as GSSM’s 32nd Commencement speaker—becoming the first alumnus to deliver the address. He was named GSSM’s Outstanding Alum in 2024 and has served on the GSSM Foundation Board of Directors since 2024.
"We are immensely proud to see Dr. Bebarta receive this extraordinary national recognition," said Danny Dorsel (’90), President of GSSM. "From our days together in GSSM’s inaugural graduating class to his leadership in combat casualty care and emergency medicine, Vik has exemplified how a strong academic foundation and a dedication to serving others can transform healthcare on a global scale. His election to the National Academy of Medicine inspires our entire community."
After graduating from GSSM in 1990, Dr. Bebarta earned his undergraduate degree as a Distinguished Graduate at the U.S. Air Force Academy, followed by obtaining his medical degree at George Washington University, emergency medicine residency at Denver Health Medical Center/University of Colorado, and fellowship training in medical toxicology at the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center.
A decorated veteran and Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, Dr. Bebarta served 14 years of active duty with four combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2022, he received the Hero of Military Medicine Award presented by the USAF Surgeon General and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine.
